How to Choose Your First Handpan
The handpan is much more than a musical instrument. It is an invitation to an inner journey, a companion for meditation, a tool for reconnecting with oneself. But when the time comes to choose your first handpan, it is perfectly normal to feel a little overwhelmed by the different models available.
Don't worry: this guide gives you all the keys to finding the handpan that truly resonates with you.
1. The Scale: Choose the Emotion That Speaks to You
Each handpan has its own scale, which defines the sonic atmosphere of the instrument. This is the most important criterion in your choice.
- D Minor (Kurd) – The most popular. Soft, melancholic, perfect for meditation and letting go.
- C Major – Bright and joyful. Ideal if you are looking for a positive, energising sound.
- Celtic – Mysterious and enchanting. For those who want to explore deeper, more haunting atmospheres.
Our tip: close your eyes and listen to the different scales before deciding. Your body will know before your mind does.
2. The Number of Notes: Balance Between Simplicity and Range
Handpans typically come with 8 to 12 notes (including the central "Ding"). The more notes, the greater the musical possibilities — but also the steeper the learning curve.
- 8 notes – Perfect for beginners. Simple, intuitive, and already highly melodic.
- 9–10 notes – The ideal balance between accessibility and musical depth.
- 11–12 notes – For those who want to explore complex harmonies.
3. The Material: Steel, Ember or Bronze?
The material of a handpan directly affects its sound, durability, and maintenance requirements.
- Nitrided steel – The most common. Warm sound, good durability.
- Ember steel – Brighter, more resonant. Requires slightly more care.
- Stainless steel – Very durable, low maintenance. Slightly more metallic tone.
- Bronze – Very warm and enveloping tone. Rarer and more expensive.
4. Your Budget: Honest Advice
A quality handpan is a significant investment. At Résonance, we offer handpans for every profile:
- Entry level – From €599. Accessible models for discovering the instrument.
- Mid range – From €799. Better resonance and finer tuning.
- Premium – From €1,200. Instruments built to last with an exceptional sound experience.
Don't compromise on quality: a poorly tuned or low-quality handpan will frustrate rather than enchant you.
