2. The Number of Notes: Balance Between Simplicity and Range

Handpans typically come with 8 to 12 notes (including the central "Ding"). The more notes, the greater the musical possibilities — but also the steeper the learning curve.

• 9–10 notes – The ideal balance between accessibility and musical depth.
• 11–12 notes – For those who want to explore complex harmonies.

• Nitrided steel – The most common. Warm sound, good durability.
• Ember steel – Brighter, more resonant. Requires slightly more care.
• Stainless steel – Very durable, low maintenance. Slightly more metallic tone.
